Tackling Your Photo Mess - A Step-by-Step Plan

Hi Reader,

I know how overwhelming it can feel to even think about organizing all your photos and memories. Trust me, I’ve been there! In fact, I’m still there, as evidenced by the photo I sent last week. The good news is, I’ve helped countless family photo keepers like yourself get a handle on their photo collections, and I’m confident I can do the same for you.

When people reach out to me they tell me things like:

  • I don’t know where to start
  • Time is my biggest problem
  • I’m overwhelmed!

The key is to approach this project in a strategic, step-by-step way. Most people find it takes at least 2-3 years to fully organize a lifetime’s worth of photos. But don’t let that timeline scare you - with the right plan in place, it’s totally doable. And I can help you make that plan!

Here are the basic steps:

  1. Start with the end in mind. Set some goals for what you want to achieve. How do you want to be able to celebrate and share your memories when you’re done?
  2. Choose a central “digital photo hub” where all your photos and videos will live, both digital and digitized prints, home movies, and more.
  3. Implement a solid 3-2-1 backup system to protect your precious memories.
  4. Take a full inventory of everything you have - print photos, digital files, framed photos, old shoeboxes, etc.
  5. Decide where you want to start - maybe it’s the digital files first, or tackling the old family albums.
  6. Block out a regular time each week or month to chip away at it. Even an hour here and there can make a big difference over time.

I know it’s a big project, but by creating your own roadmap based on your own goals, I promise it’s so worth it in the end.

Here’s an article with more details, if you’d like to read that.

And if you need help making the decisions, such as where should my Digital Photo Hub live, what should I use for backup, etc., then check out The Family Photo Keepers’ Planning Power Pack as it goes over all the choices and includes links.

Hit reply if you have any questions. I’m here to help.

Warmly,

Fancy

Hi Reader, One of my favorite quotes of all time is “Life is what happens when you’re busy planning something else.” I believe this came from an Ashleigh Brilliant book I had in the 70s. I had planned to announce something special this week - a free community event - but due to a multitude of cat and health problems, it’s not ready. It WILL be ready in a couple weeks (or I’ll die trying). But it’s not ready today. Instead, I decided to have a flash sale on The Family Photo Keeper’s Planning...
